Dr. Rob Wood
As an experienced periodontist near North Salt Lake, Dr. Wood goes out of his way to deliver exceptional treatment to patients needing advanced, essential care.
Viewing dentistry as a way to help others while also still being able to spend ample time with his children, Dr. Wood pursued this particular field, appreciating the work/life balance it provides. Not only can he be fully present when he’s with his family, but he can also give 100% while working with his patients.
But before serving in his position at Utah Implants & Periodontics, he completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Utah before going on to obtain a dental degree from the Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry. After completing specialty training in periodontics at the University of Texas, he now serves as a board-certified periodontist.
Apart from his work inside the office, Dr. Wood remains an avid learner, seeking out the latest information and advancements in dentistry through the American Dental Association, SPEAR, Utah Dental Association, and the American Academy of Periodontology.
When he’s not in the office, you’re likely to find him spending much of his time with his wife, their four children, and their dog. He also loves being outdoors fishing and taking trips to nearby beaches and lakes.
Dr. Al Long
Dr. Long first decided he wanted to become a periodontist after he was hired as a surgical assistant for a periodontics office. He ended up working there for five years and fell in love with the field. The team members he worked alongside became like family, and he developed long-term relationships with many of his patients. He appreciated the impactful service they were providing and knew that he wanted to have a career as a dental care provider.
Dr. Long has been performing periodontal surgery for the last 7 years and has worked in the dental field for 19 years. He was a surgical assistant in a periodontics office for five years as he attended the University of Utah for his undergraduate degree. Dr. Long received a dental school scholarship through the United States Navy and attended Virginia Commonwealth University for his dental doctorate. Following dental school, he completed a 1-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry program in Oceanside, CA. He then completed a 3-year periodontics residency program in Bethesda, MD and also received a master’s degree. Dr. Long worked as a periodontist for the United States Navy and served for a total of 8 years on active duty. Today, he is a board-certified periodontal and implant surgeon with the American Board of Periodontology.

What is the best way to find an implant dentist?
There are three types of dentists who are considered “specialists” when it comes to dental implant treatment:
- Oral Surgeons (experts in mouth surgery)
- Prosthodontists (experts in dental restorations)
- Periodontists (experts in gum health – like our team!)
So a good place to start is by looking for oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and periodontists in your area. A major benefit of visiting these types of dentists for dental implants is they have more extensive education and training in surgical procedures than most general dentists. They’re also more likely to be able to complete the entire process in-house.
What level of education is required to be a periodontist?
Since a periodontist is an expert in gum health, they must complete all of the same requirements expected of a general dentist – plus additional schooling that centers around their specialty.
All told, a periodontist practicing in the United States needs at least:
- A bachelor’s degree
- A Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or a Doctor of Dental Sciences (DDS)
- 3 or more years of postgraduate education
- To maintain a certain number of continuing education hours every year
Can I receive sedation for my dental appointment?
Yes! We offer oral conscious and nitrous oxide sedation. They can both be beneficial for patients with dental anxiety, sensory sensitivities, or conditions that make it uncomfortable to sit for prolonged periods of time. Oral conscious and nitrous oxide sedation do have differences, though, and each is better suited for different situations. Contact our team before the day of your appointment, and we’ll help you determine which option would be best for you.
What Should I Do if My Implant Feels Loose?
If your dental implant feels loose, call us immediately! A loose implant could mean that the implant needs to be repaired or replaced, or that gum disease has weakened the gum tissue supporting your restoration.
Either way, we’ll see you as soon as possible for prompt diagnosis and treatment. Depending on the circumstances, we may salvage your implant or take steps to combat gum disease.
Are There Any Risk Factors Associated with Gum Disease?
Many risk factors are associated with gum disease, including:
- Poor oral hygiene – Excessive bacteria in the mouth is a direct cause of gum disease
- Smoking and tobacco usage – The chemicals involved make it harder for the body to heal and increase risk of infection
- Genetics – Genes that determine how your body responds to inflammation and the general bacteria content in your mouth can play a role in how easily you develop gum disease
- Hormones – Dramatic hormone changes can increase the risk of gum disease
